Sebbene i colori, spesso in opposizione uno all’altro, sembrino dominare i suoi lavori, è la linea a definire e dare forma allo spazio.
Giochi di parole come, “Fucking Children”, frasi sarcastiche quali “Death is not the worst” o “A Boy’s Best Friend is His Mother” e dichiarazioni ironiche come “It takes Money to Feed Pretty Women” sono titoli tipicamente usati da Dasha Shishkin. In “Butter is the Passport to Pleasure” mostra il suo profondo lato umoristico.
Dasha Shishkin (Mosca, 1977) vive e lavora a Brooklyn, NY. New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Kunsthalle Hamburg, Hamburg.
Shishkin partecipò a mostre collettive al: Denver Art Museum, Denver; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Visual Art Center of Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing; China Art Objects, Los Angeles; ISE Cultural Foundation, New York; Arndt & Partner, Zurich; Galleria Alberto Peola, Turin; Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg; Parrasch Gallery, New York; Hungarian Cultural Center, New York; 33 Bond Gallery, New York; Smack Mellon and The Kentler International Drawing Space, Brooklyn, NY; Hangar-7, Salzburg; Bezalel Academy, Tel Aviv; Ratio 3, San Francisco; Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Los Angeles; Phillips de Pury & Co Gallery, New York; Cohan+Leslie, New York; Neiman Gallery, Columbia University, New York; Oliver Kamm/5BE Gallery, New York; Team Gallery, New York; Black Church Print Studio, Dublin; GF Gallery New School University, New York; Pearl Gallery, New York.

Giò Marconi Gallery is very pleased to announce Sammy, the second solo exhibition with the Russian artist Dasha Shishkin.
Shishkin, who was born in Moscow in 1977 and has received her master’s degree from Columbia University, has been living and working in New York since 1993. Her career initiated with the widely known exhibition "The Compulsive Line: Etching 1900 to Now” at the MoMA in 2006 in which she was to be seen among the likes of David Hockney, Marcel Dzama, Jake and Dinos Chapman, David Shrigley etc. Shishkin’s complex compositions are executed using her characteristic economy of line, coupled with her use of bright blocks of color and elaborate patterning. Although colors, often in opposition to one another, at first dominate her compositions, line ultimately informs the space and composition of her work. Her works are always figurative and her rather decorative style at first prevents the viewer from seeing that the subject matter is fantastical, erotic, macabre, melancholic and more often but not violent. Shishkin’s stories are not easy to decode. She is a big storyteller who depicts scenes of sensory overload in which eroticism and violence but also humor are captured. A tool that Shishkin likes to apply to further encrypt the messages of her works is the use of language in her titles: “Titles are like a cherry on a cake. The cherry does not make a cake a cherry cake, but it is still there to attract or distract an eye.” Most of the times the titles have nothing to do with the actual artwork but they are always a creative, linguistic addition to it: Puns like “Fucking Children”, sarcastic statements such as “ Death is not the worst” or “A Boy’s Best Friend is His Mother” or ironic declarations like “It takes Money to Feed Pretty Women” are typical Shishkin titles. In “Butter is the Passport to Pleasure” she does show her deeply humoristic side. For her exhibition at Giò Marconi Shishkin will use the whole ground floor space of the gallery.Large sized works on canvas and mylar, a semi transparent surface which Shishkin regularly uses and onto which she applies colour to both the front as well as the reverse of the surface, will be shown along with a multitude of small-scaled etchings and drawings on paper.
